pH indicators
In order to measure the pH of substances, various pH indicators are used.
Universal Indicator
The universal indicator is a liquid pH indicator which changes the color of a substance that it is put into according to the pH of the substance

pH strips
pH strips are small strips of filter paper that are soaked with indicators that change color according to pH. When they are dipped into aqueous substances, pH strips can tell you the acidity or alkalinity of the substance according to the color change of the strip. The strips come with a color code on the back that allows you to see which color change corresponds with which pH. The color code depends on which indicator the pH paper uses.

Phenolphthalein
Phenolphthalein is a liquid chemical compound used to indicate pH. It is colorless in neutral and acidic solutions but turns pink in basic solutions, which is why it is often used in titrations

Litmus Paper
Litmus paper is another type of pH indicator that comes in paper strips. The paper comes in two colors, red and blue. The red paper turns blue when dipped in a base, but stays red when dipped in an acid. The blue paper turns red in an acid, but stays blue in a base. There is no change for either type of paper when they are dipped in a neutral substance.
